Deputies’ News – Term 2 Week 3

East Hamersley Deputy News

The Year 1 students have been practising their running in preparation for the East Hamersley Primary school’s cross-country event on Wednesday the 1st June. I have seen them running on the oval and around the school grounds and they look very determined but somewhat tired. I can’t wait to cheer them all on.

The Pre-primary children have been playing in the adventure playground for most of the year and I have noticed that they are developing some great friendships. They constantly amaze me with the amount of kindness and empathy that they show towards each other.

It’s great to see our kindergarten students all back after some long bouts of sickness. I have heard some great language being used over the last few weeks and this is helping them to connect with one another and to establish friendships. It’s a joyous room to visit.

The well-deserved Year 1 honour certificate recipients on Friday 13th May were Ciara Boterhoven de Haan, Kotaro Maeda, Dihain Wickramaratne, Sebastian Scoby-Smith.

Just a reminder that our next school development day is Tuesday 7th June and the children do not attend school that day.

A focus in Pre-primary and Year 1 classrooms at the moment is developing students’ language skills through a “Literature Based Unit.” Students have been engaged in a variety of learning experiences related to “The Three Little Pigs” for Pre-primary and “Possum Magic” for Year One. A range of oral language skills are being targeted. Narrative is an important skill as it bridges the gap between oral and literate language.

Our Kindy classes have learnt the rules and routines of the classroom and playground so well. The Kindy classes’ current story is “Peace at Last”, and the theme of family is being linked to this text. The home corner is set up to represent the bears’ house in the text for the children to act out the story. See below for some photos! It is wonderful to see the children engaging enthusiastically in learning experiences.
For Term 2 we have Pre-service Teachers from Edith Cowan University and Education Assistant students from North Metropolitan TAFE helping in some Pre-primary and Year 1 classes. We welcome them to the WCLDC, and I know they will gain valuable professional practice whilst here.

Student photos through Kapture Photography are this week (Thursday Week 3) for the Padbury campus. Parents/Carers should have received the flyer with the codes for ordering. Please contact the office on 9407 3050 if you require another flyer.
