East Hamersley Campus Year 1 News
What another fantastic start to the term for Year 1, refreshed and ready to keep learning.
We have been busy learning about Australian Animals and their habitats. We were very excited to have a visit from WestOz Wildlife and we got to meet some special animals up close and personal. We were all very brave and felt the fur of the koala and dingo and the scales of the snakes and bobtail lizard.
Our class vegetable garden has now been planted with potatoes, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, strawberries, spinach and some beautiful flowering plants to attract the bees and butterflies.
We are crossing our fingers that everything grows well!
This term we will be studying Geography- learning about the world, it’s people, climate and the European and Noongar seasons we experience here in Perth in addition to extending our Math, Literacy and Language skills.
Keep an eye on Seesaw to see what we have been working on.
Poseidon Campus – Year 1B
Toward the end of last term, we celebrated Harmony Day and Easter together with Poseidon P.S.
In Science in Term 1 we learnt all about living things – plants and animals. At the beginning of this term, we have been learning that living things can be found in places which meet their needs. These places are called the animals’ habitats. Some animals camouflage to hide in their habitat. This helps meet their need for shelter. We had fun pretending to be ‘birds’ searching for ‘caterpillars’ which were camouflaged on the grass. We asked the questions:
Which caterpillars camouflage better on the grass?
Which caterpillars would the birds eat first?
This term we will be challenging ourselves to learn different ways to spell vowel sounds; discover what “Geography” is all about; and to keep learning how to understand and use bigger and bigger numbers.
We love learning.

Quinns Beach Campus – Year 1B
The end of Term 1 was a very busy time for the Year 1 students. The children were excited to go on their very first excursion. We visited Caversham Wildlife Park to learn more about the parts of animals, their habitats and what they need to survive.
In the last week the children showcased the Easter hats that they had created. Their creations were impressive and very colourful!
After enjoying a holiday break, we have returned to school with great enthusiasm! Our Year 1 students have begun their morning reading rotations where the children are working in small groups as they practise reading, writing, speaking and listening. The students enjoy these small group sessions where they are able to have fun practising and learning new literacy skills.
This term, we will be studying geography. We will learn about the weather, the globe, features of places and the local community. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term!
